Media Assignment 1- Purpose of Music Videos

Music videos possess a number of purposes like audience gratification. This is a term that refers to how the audience receive the content within the video such as escapism, visceral experience and iconography like Michael Jacksons' Thriller. Music videos can also be used as an extra stream of income for record labels and production companies such as Sony Music Entertainment Inc. However over the past 50 years the way people consumed music videos has changed drastically. It first started with a performance from Dusty Springfield on the first broadcast  episode of Top of the Pops - a popular BBC show known for showing artists performing live. Then MTV, the first 24 hour music channel and one of the most well known music channels to date, came around and released the first music video "Video killed the radio star", this set off a ripple affect other music channels were appearing like VH1 and Kerrang, all with different genres of music being broadcast. As time went on Youtube came around and once again changed the way we view music videos. People could view videos on their phones and on computers instead of having to wait hours fort he song they wanted. Not only did it change the way we viewed the music videos but it also changed how artists made their videos. Advances in CGI and animation became more apparent.

Not all songs released either online or on a CD have music videos to accompany them, yet they are still released as an extra source of income for a record company. Marshell Mathers aka. Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg founded Shady Records in 1999. Eminems' music mainly belongs to the rap/pop genre with his music resonating with a young adult audience. Since then Eminem has released several music videos including "Superman","Without me" and "Stan" although they are all released under Aftermath record company which was founded by Eminem but it was also founded by Dr. Dre too.

Childish Gambino This is America music video helps to promote the song through youtube because of its artistic style of music video. A major theme in the video is political consciousness which can be drawn from the video as it is illustrative. The narrative behind the video is violence in America and how the government do everything they can to cover it up. It is an impressionist video promoting the lyrics in the song. Justin Bieber has shifted his musical direction over the last decade. He has moved from pre teens, with his hit single "Baby", to young adults, with his other hits singles including "Sorry" and "what do you mean?".

As his music changed so did the music videos that accompanied them, this partly could've been because as he was growing up his music had to change too. The iconography advanced from him with his guitar and leather jackets with connotations of being innocent and young to baggy tops and tattoos and girls indicating he has grown up and starting to change, influencing all of his fans through his music videos. Synergy is key to looking music videos to other media platforms. My chosen example is Charlie Puth with his No.1 single See you again featuring Wiz Khalifa, this video linked to blockbuster film Fast and Furious 7. Not only did this promote the film to new audiences but it promoted the artists to a new fan base as well as overall boosting income for all parties involved.
